Backdrafting

Backdrafting is when combustion gases from a furnace, water heater, or fireplace are pulled back into the home instead of venting outside.

HVAC, Comfort, and Air Quality

Why it matters

Backdrafting can bring dangerous gases like carbon monoxide into living spaces. It is a serious safety concern.

Where people get this wrong

Backdrafting can happen when the home is too tight or when exhaust fans overpower the combustion air supply. Carbon monoxide alarms are essential.

Real-world example

A powerful range hood runs during cooking. The water heater in the basement starts spilling fumes because the hood is pulling air from the flue. That is backdrafting.

Where this hits your build

This affects daily comfort in every room. Problems often show up after move-in when certain rooms run hot, cold, or noisy.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
