Blocking

Blocking is extra wood installed between studs so you have solid backing to mount heavy items later.

Framing and Structure

Why it matters

Blocking saves you from opening walls later. It also makes installs stronger and safer.

Where people get this wrong

Stud spacing is rarely where you want it. Blocking puts wood where you need it. Blocking is cheap before drywall and expensive after drywall.

Real-world example

You buy a heavy mirror and the only good spot is between studs. With blocking, you hit solid wood every time. Without blocking, you trust anchors and hope.

Where this hits your build

This shows up during framing. Once walls are up and covered, you lose access. The pre-drywall walkthrough is your window to verify.
