Blown insulation

Blown insulation is loose-fill insulation that is blown into attics, walls, or floors using a machine.

Insulation, Air Sealing, and Ventilation

Why it matters

It can fill odd-shaped spaces and cover large areas quickly. It works well in attics and can be added to existing walls in some cases.

Where people get this wrong

Blown insulation can settle over time. Depth markers help you verify installed thickness. In walls, dense-pack installation is important to prevent settling.

Real-world example

An insulation crew blows fluffy cellulose into an attic. The attic ruler shows 14 inches. That depth gives the R-value the home needs for the climate zone.

Where this hits your build

This affects comfort, energy costs, and indoor air quality. It gets locked behind drywall, so decisions here need to be right before finishing starts.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
