Data plate
A data plate is the label on equipment that shows model number, serial number, manufacture date, and specifications.
Why it matters
This information is needed for warranty service, ordering parts, and verifying that equipment matches what was specified.
Where people get this wrong
The data plate is on the equipment, not in the manual. It can be behind a panel or in a hard-to-see location. Photograph it at install.
Real-world example
The HVAC needs repair. The technician asks for the model and serial number. The data plate inside the air handler provides the answer.
Where this hits your build
This comes up early, before construction starts. It affects your contract, your budget, or both. Misunderstanding it can cost you money or leverage.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
