Effluent
Effluent is the liquid wastewater that leaves the septic tank and goes to the drain field.
Why it matters
The drain field must absorb effluent safely. If the field is overloaded, effluent can surface or back up.
Where people get this wrong
Effluent is not clean water. A drain field is not a storage tank. It relies on soil absorption.
Real-world example
After heavy rain, the yard near the drain field stays soggy and smells bad. That can be the system struggling to absorb effluent.
Where this hits your build
This matters before and during site work. Rural systems have regulations, setbacks, and maintenance requirements that affect where you can build and how you live.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
