Egress window
An egress window is a window large enough to escape through in an emergency.
Why it matters
Egress requirements are about life safety. They also affect how bedrooms are legally counted.
Where people get this wrong
A small window that opens is not always an egress window. Basement bedrooms often need special window wells for egress.
Real-world example
A basement bedroom is cozy until you imagine a fire blocking the stairs. Egress is the backup exit that can save a life.
Where this hits your build
This comes up during selections and installation. Performance depends on the product and the install. A good window installed poorly still leaks.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
