Hot water recirculation

Hot water recirculation is a system that keeps hot water circulating in the pipes so it arrives instantly at fixtures without waiting.

Plumbing, Drains, and Water Systems

Why it matters

It eliminates the cold-water wait at distant fixtures, saving water and improving comfort, but uses a small amount of energy to keep water warm.

Where people get this wrong

A dedicated return line is best but a comfort valve system can use the cold-water line as a return path if no return line exists.

Real-world example

Without recirculation, you wait 90 seconds for hot water at the master bath. With it, hot water is there in under 5 seconds.

Where this hits your build

This comes up during rough-in and final fixture installation. Accessibility for future repairs matters as much as the initial install.
