HSPF rating
HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor and measures heat pump efficiency in heating mode.
Why it matters
Higher HSPF means the heat pump uses less electricity to provide the same heat. This is especially important in cold climates.
Where people get this wrong
HSPF applies to heating. SEER applies to cooling. The same heat pump has both ratings. Cold-climate heat pumps may list additional ratings.
Real-world example
You compare two heat pumps. One has HSPF 8.5, the other HSPF 10. The higher-rated unit will cost less to run in heating season.
Where this hits your build
This affects daily comfort in every room. Problems often show up after move-in when certain rooms run hot, cold, or noisy.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
