Ice dam
An ice dam is a ridge of ice at the roof edge that traps melting snow and forces water under the roof covering.
Why it matters
Ice dams cause leaks that show up inside the house, often at ceilings and exterior walls.
Where people get this wrong
Ice dams are usually a heat and ventilation problem, not a shingle brand problem. More insulation alone does not always solve it if air leaks remain.
Real-world example
You see icicles on the eaves and then notice a brown ceiling stain in the corner bedroom. That is a classic ice dam storyline.
Where this hits your build
This affects how your home handles water. Water damage is one of the most expensive problems to fix, and it often starts with details that seem small.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
