Perc test (percolation test)

A perc test measures how well soil absorbs water, which helps decide if a septic drain field can work.

Septic, Well, and Rural Utilities

Why it matters

If soil cannot absorb water at the right rate, a standard septic system may not be allowed or may fail.

Where people get this wrong

Passing a perc test does not mean you can put the drain field anywhere you want. A perc test is not the same as a full site plan or a full engineering design.

Real-world example

A property looks perfect until the perc test shows the soil drains too slowly. Suddenly the dream backyard has a new reality and the septic plan needs to change.

Where this hits your build

This matters before and during site work. Rural systems have regulations, setbacks, and maintenance requirements that affect where you can build and how you live.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
