Rafter
A rafter is a sloped framing member that supports the roof deck and shingles.
Why it matters
Rafters carry roof loads down to walls or beams. Size and spacing affect strength. Rafters are site-built, unlike factory-made trusses.
Where people get this wrong
Rafters and trusses are different systems. Rafters allow more usable attic space. Trusses are typically more economical for simple roof shapes.
Real-world example
A roof is framed with individual rafters so the attic can be finished as living space. The open framing allows insulation between the rafters.
Where this hits your build
This shows up during framing. Once walls are up and covered, you lose access. The pre-drywall walkthrough is your window to verify.
