Sheathing
Sheathing is the panel material, usually plywood or OSB, that covers the outside of wall framing or the roof deck.
Why it matters
Sheathing provides structural bracing and a nailing surface. It is also a key layer in the building envelope where WRB and air sealing attach.
Where people get this wrong
Sheathing can be structural or non-structural. Foam sheathing does not provide racking resistance like plywood. Check what type is required.
Real-world example
The walls are framed and sheathed with OSB. The crew then adds house wrap over the sheathing to complete the weather barrier.
Where this hits your build
This shows up during framing. Once walls are up and covered, you lose access. The pre-drywall walkthrough is your window to verify.
