Shimming
Shimming is using thin pieces of material to make a window or door sit straight, level, and supported.
Why it matters
Good shimming keeps windows operating smoothly and helps prevent air and water leaks.
Where people get this wrong
Foam does not replace proper support. Shims provide structure. Too much pressure from shims can warp a frame.
Real-world example
A door latch works fine on day one, then starts rubbing as the house settles. Good shimming and support reduce those headaches.
Where this hits your build
This comes up during selections and installation. Performance depends on the product and the install. A good window installed poorly still leaks.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
