Span
Span is the distance a structural member like a beam, joist, or header covers between supports.
Why it matters
Span determines what size member is needed. Longer spans require deeper or stronger members.
Where people get this wrong
Span tables in the code give allowable spans for common situations. Unusual loads or conditions may require engineering.
Real-world example
You want a big opening between kitchen and dining room. The header needs to span 12 feet. The engineer calculates what size beam is needed for that span.
