Water hammer

Water hammer is a banging or thumping in pipes when water flow stops suddenly.

Why it matters

It can damage valves and fittings and it can loosen connections over time.

Where people get this wrong

It is not always a loose pipe. Pressure and fast-closing valves can cause it. It can get worse after new fixtures are installed.

Real-world example

You shut off a faucet and the wall thumps like someone kicked it. The pipes are complaining about a sudden stop.

Where this hits your build

This term shows up during construction and affects decisions that are hard to reverse once the work moves forward. Understanding it now saves time, money, and frustration later.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
