Counterflashing
Counterflashing is flashing that covers and protects the top edge of step flashing, often at chimneys and masonry walls.
Why it matters
It helps keep water from getting behind the flashing system.
Where people get this wrong
Surface caulk at a chimney is not a long-term plan. Counterflashing must overlap correctly so water sheds out.
Real-world example
A chimney leak comes back every year after a quick caulk job. Proper counterflashing is the fix that stops the annual repair loop.
Where this hits your build
This affects how your home handles water. Water damage is one of the most expensive problems to fix, and it often starts with details that seem small.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
