Grading
Grading is shaping the soil so water flows away from the foundation.
Why it matters
Bad grading sends water toward the home. That can cause basement leaks, rot at the base of walls, and foundation issues.
Where people get this wrong
A sump pump does not fix bad grading. It manages the result. A small slope the wrong way can cause big problems over time.
Real-world example
After a storm, the yard looks fine. Two days later the basement smells damp. The ground was quietly feeding water toward the foundation.
Where this hits your build
This matters during site work and foundation. Mistakes here get buried and are expensive to fix later. Pay attention before concrete is poured.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
