Grinder pump

A grinder pump grinds wastewater and pumps it uphill from a low lot to a higher sewer main or septic system.

Plumbing, Drains, and Water Systems

Why it matters

Lots below sewer line elevation cannot drain by gravity. A grinder pump makes construction possible but adds ongoing maintenance responsibility.

Where people get this wrong

A grinder pump is not a sump pump. A sump pump handles clean groundwater. A grinder pump handles sewage and has cutting blades.

Real-world example

Your lot sits 6 feet below the street sewer line. A grinder pump station in the yard grinds waste and pushes it uphill through a force main to the sewer.

Where this hits your build

This comes up during rough-in and final fixture installation. Accessibility for future repairs matters as much as the initial install.
