Island vent (loop vent)

An island vent is a venting method where the vent pipe routes under the floor and loops back to connect to the main vent stack in a nearby wall.

Kitchen, Bath, and Fixture Decisions

Why it matters

Kitchen islands cannot have a vent pipe going straight up through the ceiling. An island vent solves the drainage airflow problem below the floor.

Where people get this wrong

Island vents and air admittance valves both solve the same problem but some codes do not allow air admittance valves. Check local code.

Real-world example

The kitchen island has a sink. Since there is no wall above, the plumber runs the vent pipe down, under the floor, and back up into the nearest wall to tie into the main stack.

Where this hits your build

This hits during the selection phase. Choices here affect layout, daily use, and maintenance. Samples and measurements matter more than catalog photos.
