Packaging or installation certificate

A packaging or installation certificate is the document included with an appliance that records the installation date and is needed to activate the warranty.

Planning, Contracts, and Permits

Why it matters

Filling out and keeping this certificate protects your warranty. Without proof of installation date, warranty claims can be denied.

Where people get this wrong

This is not the same as the user manual. It is a specific form that often gets thrown away with packaging. Photograph it or file it immediately.

Real-world example

The water heater fails at 4 years. The manufacturer says the warranty is 6 years from manufacture, not install. The installation certificate proves when it was actually installed.

Where this hits your build

This comes up early, before construction starts. It affects your contract, your budget, or both. Misunderstanding it can cost you money or leverage.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
