Septic tank
A septic tank is the buried tank that holds wastewater long enough for solids to settle and for scum to float.
Why it matters
The tank protects the drain field by keeping most solids out of the soil system.
Where people get this wrong
A septic tank is not a magic trash can. What you flush matters. A bigger tank can be a smart future-proof move if bedroom count may increase.
Real-world example
A family grows and a finished basement becomes a new bedroom. If the tank and system were sized for the future, you avoid a painful upgrade later.
Where this hits your build
This matters before and during site work. Rural systems have regulations, setbacks, and maintenance requirements that affect where you can build and how you live.
Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
