Compaction

Compaction is packing soil so it is dense and stable.

Site, Foundation, and Drainage

Why it matters

Poor compaction leads to settlement. Settlement causes cracks, uneven floors, and doors that never quite fit.

Where people get this wrong

Compaction is not stomping dirt with boots. It needs the right equipment and technique. Compaction can be overdone in septic drain fields and cause failure.

Real-world example

A garage slab settles near the door and creates a dip that holds water. That can happen when fill was not compacted in layers.

Where this hits your build

This matters during site work and foundation. Mistakes here get buried and are expensive to fix later. Pay attention before concrete is poured.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
