Soil bearing
Soil bearing is how much weight the soil can support without compressing too much.
Why it matters
Foundations are only as strong as the soil under them.
Where people get this wrong
Hard dirt is not the same as good bearing soil. Fill dirt can settle if it is not placed and compacted correctly.
Real-world example
A builder backfills a low spot quickly and builds on it. Years later, that area settles and the slab cracks. That can be a soil bearing and compaction issue.
Where this hits your build
This matters during site work and foundation. Mistakes here get buried and are expensive to fix later. Pay attention before concrete is poured.
