Expansion gap (flooring)

An expansion gap is a small space left at edges so flooring can expand and contract without buckling.

Interior Finishes and Trim

Why it matters

Many floors move with seasons. Without gaps, floors can swell and buckle.

Where people get this wrong

The gap is often hidden by baseboard or shoe molding. Caulking the gap closed can defeat the purpose.

Real-world example

A floating floor looks perfect for months, then a hump appears in summer humidity. That can happen when the floor has no room to move.

Where this hits your build

This comes up during the finish phase. Lighting, angles, and personal expectations collide here. What looks fine at noon can look rough at dusk.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
