GFCI

A GFCI is a safety device that shuts off power quickly when it senses a shock risk, especially near water.

Electrical, Power, and Lighting

Why it matters

It helps prevent serious shocks in wet areas like kitchens, baths, garages, basements, and outdoors.

Where people get this wrong

GFCI is about protecting people, not protecting appliances. One GFCI can protect other outlets downstream if wired that way.

Real-world example

An outlet trips when you plug in a hair dryer. That annoyance is the point. The device would rather ruin your morning than ruin your heartbeat.

Where this hits your build

This matters during rough-in and before drywall. Once walls close, adding or moving wiring becomes expensive. Plan ahead.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
