AFCI
An AFCI is a safety device that shuts power off when it detects dangerous arcing in wiring.
Why it matters
Arcing can start fires inside walls where you cannot see the problem.
Where people get this wrong
AFCI is different from GFCI. AFCI targets arcing. GFCI targets shock risk. Some devices can cause nuisance trips if wiring or equipment is finicky.
Real-world example
A cord gets pinched behind a dresser and starts sparking in tiny bursts. You might never notice until it is too late. AFCI protection is meant to catch that risk early.
Where this hits your build
This matters during rough-in and before drywall. Once walls close, adding or moving wiring becomes expensive. Plan ahead.
