Wire gauge
Wire gauge is the thickness of a wire. Thicker wire can safely carry more current.
Why it matters
Using the wrong size wire can lead to overheating and fire risk.
Where people get this wrong
A bigger breaker does not make a circuit safer. The wire must match the breaker. Long runs can need larger wire because of voltage drop.
Real-world example
Someone replaces a tripping breaker with a bigger one to stop the trips. The trips stop, but the wire in the wall can now overheat. That is like putting a bigger fuse in a car and hoping the smoke stays inside.
Where this hits your build
This matters during rough-in and before drywall. Once walls close, adding or moving wiring becomes expensive. Plan ahead.
