Zone damper

A zone damper is a motorized flap inside a duct that opens or closes to control airflow to a specific area of the house.

HVAC, Comfort, and Air Quality

Why it matters

Zone dampers let a single HVAC system deliver different amounts of air to different rooms or zones based on each zone's thermostat.

Where people get this wrong

Zone dampers control airflow, not temperature directly. They work with the HVAC system and thermostats to maintain comfort in each zone.

Real-world example

The upstairs gets hot in the afternoon. The zone damper to the upstairs opens wider to send more cool air while the damper to the cooler downstairs partially closes.

Where this hits your build

This affects daily comfort in every room. Problems often show up after move-in when certain rooms run hot, cold, or noisy.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
