Gutters

Gutters are channels along the roof edge that collect rainwater and direct it to downspouts.

Why it matters

Gutters keep roof water away from the foundation and protect siding and landscaping. Clogged or missing gutters can cause serious water damage.

Where people get this wrong

Gutters need maintenance. Clogged gutters can overflow and damage fascia, siding, and foundation. Gutter guards help but still need occasional cleaning.

Real-world example

After a heavy rain, water pours over the gutter edge and splashes against the foundation. The gutters are clogged with debris and need cleaning.
